- Abstract
The article discusses the possible Roman origin of the pounds, shillings, and pence (£: s: d) British monetary system. Topics explored include the reintroduction of the said monetary system into Western Europe by Roman Emperor Charlemagne and its adoption in Great Britain attributed to King Offa of Mercia, characteristics of the coinage system of the Roman Empire, and the currency reform instituted by the Carolingians in the 700s.
