The article examines a potentially significant Latin pun on the English word "vale" which is a topographical noun. Topics covered include the meaning of the word in Latin and its association with funerals, the use of the word by major 19th-century poets such as Algernon Charles Swinburne and Alfred Tennyson, and the reference of the word to departures or dying in World War I poems.
