Egypto-Modernism: James Henry Breasted, H.D., and the New Past.
- Authors
Bryant, Marsha; Eaverly, Mary Ann
- Abstract
The article discusses Egypto-modernism, focusing on the works of H. D. (Hilda Doolittle) and James Henry Breasted, the father of American Egyptology and founder of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago. It talks about the "New Past" formulated by Breasted, which positioned the United States as the cultural inheritor of Egypt. A comparison of the archaeologically-inflected views of Breasted and H. D. with other modernist representations of Egypt in relation to ancient culture is offered.
