- Abstract
The aim of this study is to improve the mathematical modeling teaching competencies of teachers and to determine their thoughts on the teaching model process with the teaching experiment based on the mathematical modeling teaching model. At the same time, the effect of the teaching experiment on teachers' mathematical teaching approaches was evaluated. This study was designed in the phenomenological pattern, one of the qualitative research methods, and was conducted on 10 mathematics teachers studying at the institute of science, graduate program, mathematics education department of a state university. Four actions were implemented within the scope of the "Mathematical Modeling in Mathematics Education" course. Participants' views on actions were collected using the semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers. The obtained data were analyzed by content analysis method. As a result of the research, the teaching experiment contributed to teachers' gaining a conscious and systematic approach to modeling, the development of a different perspective in interpreting daily life, and the advancement of the very important skill of mathematization and problem solving. In other words, it can be said that the teaching experiment offers the necessary opportunity for the development of effective pedagogy knowledge base. In order for teachers to gain more experience in mathematical modeling applications, it is thought that the applications of mathematical modeling activities should be included more in the field education courses included in the undergraduate program.
