- Abstract
Through the ekphrasis of a painting by Rembrandt, Self-portrait as Zeuxis laughing, an enigmatic encounter occurs--unexpectedly or belatedly-- between this painting and a photograph of Jacques Derrida taken by Raymond Depardon in June 2004. The uncanny resemblance impelled by Rembrandt's self-portrait, especially in the version that was revealed via X-rays, questions the scope of Derrida's gaze (had he "overseen" this image when the snapshot was taken?) as well as the effect of survival embedded into the philosopher's undecidable smile, deemed to be his "last words." Here, then, is the enigma of a palimpsest that plays itself out between the painter and the philosopher, not to mention the intercession of a decisive third party, Jean Genet.
