- Abstract
Dewey believes that teachers should not only be passive executors of external orders, but also fully enjoy their working autonomy. Dewey devotes his life to theoretical elaboration, practical exploration and public appeal for the necessity and possibility of teachers' working autonomy. He criticizes the bureaucratic system advocated by management progressivism, and advocates teachers ought to be given the right to participate in educational management; he opposes equating “ educational science " with procedural teaching methods provided for teachers, and emphasizes that the core of teacher education is to protect teachers' intellectual independence; he calls on teachers to abandon the habit of thinking inertia and obedience and take the initiative to strive for their working autonomy. Dewey regards the vitality and creativity of ordinary teachers as the fundamental driving force of educational progress. Dewey's thought on teachers' working autonomy has multiple warning and enlightening significance for contemporary educational reform.
