- Abstract
The CONVISO® SMART system, consisting of herbicide-tolerant sugar beet varieties and the complementary ALS herbicide CONVISO® ONE, allows an effective weed control while offering high selectivity and a reduced number of herbicide applications. Growing an ALS-tolerant variety, however, can lead to an increased use of ALS-herbicides in the crop rotation, which in turn can increase selection pressure for resistant weeds. To avoid the development of herbicide resistance and ensure the longevity and effectiveness of the CONVISO® SMART system, an accompanying stewardship is established. Besides bolter management and the correct use of the CONVISO® SMART system, the stewardship focuses on integrated weed control and resistance management. European and global experiences show that the comprehensive information supply and local consultant trainings lead to a higher awareness of growers for the CONVISO® SMART system. Regular exchange with the local consultants offers the opportunity to recognize any potential weaknesses and initiate solutions at an early stage. The CONVISO® SMART stewardship concept therefore provides an example for successful and sustainable management of an herbicide-tolerant crop.
