- Abstract
Hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) with strong hydrophobicity are easy to accumulate in organic-rich sediments. When the intakes of HOCs in the overlying water decrease, HOCs in sediments will be further released into water body, thus posing a certain threat to the ecosystem. Activated carbon (AC) as a common adsorbent is used for treating HOCs in sediments. Most studies were aimed at analyzing the efficiency of AC remediation of contaminated sediments and the impact of various factors on AC remediation. However, few systematic analyses have been carried out on the whole situation of AC remediation of sediments. Therefore, the mechanisms for adsorption of AC on HOCs and various impact factors including AC properties, compound properties, environmental factors, kinetic factors, and bioturbation, etc. were summarized. Moreover, the situation after adding AC may cause harm to several typical organisms in sediment was also analyzed. It can provide some suggestions for the effective governance of HOCs in sediments by AC in the future.
