- Authors
LIZOTTE, ALAN; ZATZ, MARJORIE S.
- Abstract
The article looks at the mandatory sentence enhancers for crimes committed with the use of firearms in the State of California. It presents a study of the use of sentence enhancers for defendants arrested for felonies for the period 1977 to 1979, citing the statistical methodology used to arrive at which factors have the greatest impact on the length of the sentence to prison. The author speculates on why courts have enforced manadatory sentence enhancers and contends that their effectiveness in reducing crime rate, eliminating discrimination in sentencing and making citizens more trusting of the criminal justice system will not be measured until they are fully enforced.
