- Title
THE UNITED STATES AND THE LAW OF THE SEA AFTER UNCLOS III.
- Authors
Malone, James L.
- Abstract
The article discusses the decision of the U.S. to reject the Third United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III) in 1982. It is noted that the provisions on deep seabed mining of the Draft Convention were not acceptable to the U.S. as they were contrary to its vital interests. The lack of authority of the international bureaucracy Preparatory Commission (PrepCom) to change the Convention is tackled. Also discussed are the notion of the New International Economic Order (NIEO) and the nonseabed provisions of the Convention.
