- Abstract
70% of the Syrians under temporary protection in Turkey consists of children and young people (UNHCR, 2020), which means Turkey has a young and incredibly dynamic Syrian population. Therefore, education is one of the urgent needs of this changing population. It is important not only to take special precautions to serve Syrian students' educational needs but also to ensure that local students are aware of cultural diversity that arises from sharing the same environment by accepting and embracing each other's social identities without making the Syrian students feel othered or marginalized. The purpose of this research is to observe how creative drama can be a conduit for both Syrian and local students 1) to collectively participate in the school culture, 2) to increase awareness of issues around adaptation, and 3) to support intergroup communication. For this purpose, six creative drama workshops lasting 3 hours were implemented with the participation of eighteen Syrian and eighteen local students. Ethnographic Case Study approach was used in this study. Data resources included interviews, observation, participant observation, video analysis, and document analysis. The Constant Comparative Data Analysis method was utilized for the analysis of the data. According to the findings, the Syrian and local students grew closer and formed friendships through creative drama. Additionally, it was observed that students with different social identities created a shared communicative repertoire through play and improvisation, which enabled both groups to help each other. Other results were that students started to understand each other, empathize, and they were more inclined to communicate, help, and support each other.
