- Abstract
This article examines aesthetic and political aspects of the opera Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (1930), with libretto by Bertolt Brecht and music by Kurt Weill. Taking as starting point the text Mahagonny (1930) by T.W. Adorno, it interpretes its surrealist condition attributed by him through elements of plot and music. We will justify the presence of an aesthetic of the political or a politics of aesthetics in the work, prohibited by the Nazis soon after its premiere and shown as an example of degenerate art in one of the first exhibitions of Entartete Musik organized in Düsseldorf in 1938.
