- Abstract
This study aimed to assess whether the level of systemic nitric oxide (NO) metabolites may be prognostic indicators for atherosclerosis, and whether there are gender differences. For this we used a rat model of experimental atherosclerosis (high cholesterol diet 2% for 3 month). NO synthesis was evaluated by controlling systemic serum nitrite and nitrate (Griess method). Dietary effects were confirmed by the significant increase in total cholesterol, triglycerides and blood glucose, plus HDL-cholesterol reduction. Conclusions: 1. NO synthesis in experimental atherosclerosis is significantly increased; 2. Since NO synthesis is increased risk of nitro-oxidative stress, serum nitrite and nitrate can be used as indicators of poor prognosis in atherosclerosis.
