- Abstract
Postretirement learning styles seem autonomous and diverse; therefore, retirees can select among and follow such learning styles. The aim of this study was to explore the transformative learning processes of retirees’ learning experience, including learning motivation, learning styles, and meanings. We conducted semistructured interviews with nine older adult learners (age range: 56-77 years) who participated in formal and informal learning programs after retirement. The study results are summarized as follows: (1) Prior experiences influenced initial learning motivations after retirement, and future goals constituted the primary motivation for learning transformation. (2) From early retirement to the transformative period, the interviewees experienced diverse learning styles, which subsequently prompted them to develop new actions and meanings through self-reflection. (3) Through postretirement learning, retirees achieved successful aging, gaining new knowledge, deriving satisfaction from their contributions, and gaining self-fulfillment and transcendence through continuous participation in transformative learning processes.
