- Abstract
This article is intended to illustrate the sheer diversity of factors which influenced pricing policy over a period of 14 years in part of the textile industry, taking a particular firm as an example. In the article's six sections, the first two deal briefly with the texturising sector and Qualitex Co. The next three sections cover general sectoral influences on pricing, the information available for pricing decisions and specific factors determining prices within the company. The final section draws together some conclusions and outlines developments in the sector during the 1970s. The first of the major influences on pricing policy was the industry's rapid technological development. After the slow multi process texturising process had been replaced by a single stage machine, the progressive improvements in machine efficiency brought down the cost of texturising dramatically during the period. Output per spindle on the machines produced by the leading British machinery manufacturer went up more than 20 fold between 1958 and 1971 as a result of successive improvements on five generations of machines.
