- Abstract
A case study is presented on cash-balance plans as alternatives to pension plans. Cash-balance plans are a combination of a 401(k) and a defined-benefit plan which can act as a solution for design, communication, and funding problems with pension plan design. This practice began in 1984 with the BOC Group PLC being one of the first to adopt it in 1986. The company, an international industrial gas and medical products firm, employs over 35,000 worldwide.
