An essay is presented regarding the novel "Daisy Miller," by Henry James which portrays the words charm and charming with a larger motives and impressions. It says that charming is the word used in the polite novel of manners, which depicts how young Americans see things. It also says that James understands charm as a spell. Meanwhile, the author mentions the work of Nathaniel Hawthorne which introduced a deeper and darker meaning of charm, wherein he relates charm with magic and witchcraft.
