- Abstract
The book "Gender and Text" by Dennis Scheller-Boltz deals with the transformation of text genres and conventions in a diverse society. The author emphasizes the importance of social and societal aspects in the composition of texts and demands that these should neither discriminate against nor exclude individuals of different genders and identities. He also discusses the connection between gender, identity, and language, advocating for an adequate linguistic reflection of contemporary notions of gender, identity, and society, and emphasizing the necessity of awareness for the linguistically representable societal diversity. The article deals with gender-inclusive language and its usage in various text genres. It is pointed out that in its 28th edition, the Duden dictionary only recognizes the generic use of the masculine form in a context-specific manner and excludes sexual orientation. It also mentions advertising campaigns that positively value gender diversity. Furthermore, third genders in different cultures are briefly mentioned. The fourth chapter addresses text linguistics and the usage of gender-inclusive language in job advertisements. The fifth chapter deals with the transformation of text genres and the inclusion of women and non-binary individuals. The sixth chapter focuses on the usage of gender-inclusive language in German television. The author concludes by pointing out the need for discussion regarding gender-inclusive language in aesthetic texts.
