- Authors

- Abstract
Although much has been written about church and royal musical establishments, their repertories and their manuscript and printed sources in 16th- to mid-17th-century Portugal, not much is known with certainty about how the music was actually performed. Using a variety of documentary and practical evidence such as regulations for singers and instrumentalists, payrolls, accounts of ceremonies and marginalia in choirbooks, this article addresses aspects of performing practice in Portuguese church music from the mid- to late 16th century through the example of Évora Cathedral, focusing especially on the type and number of vocal and instrumental performers involved and their forms of interaction.
