- Abstract
Malay mindset can be seen in the many treasures of the Malay language. This study focused on the analyzing of meaning contained in Malay song lyrics. This is to allow us to understand better the mindset the Malays. Semantic field study and analyze the meaning of words and sentences. Word is a unit of free speech that has its own meaning. Besides that, language and society are inseparable because they are connected with each other, that language is used by the society to convey meaning to the listener. Language in song lyrics is very important to convey the meaning to the listeners. The meaning of the song lyrics is not limited in conveying meaning to the listener only, but also have connection with the song writers thinking. Therefore, this study is conducted to analyze the types of word's meaning and categories of thinking style in the song lyrics. The study also describes the relationship between the types of word's meaning and the lyricist thinking style. This study is using the data from the song lyrics sang by Dato' Siti Nur Haliza from 1996 to 2010 which is used purposive sampling. Moreover, this study is using the seven types of meaning concept and Six Thinking Hats theory which is introduced by Geoffery Leech (1974) and Edward De Bono (1992) respectively. The result shows that there are six out of seven types of meaning concept used in song writing; connotative, stylistic, affective, reflection, collocative and thematic. In addition, the findings also indicate that the six color scheme or six thinking style can be seen clearly through the verses of songs used as corpus data in this study. Malay song lyrics can give us an idea about the Malay mindset.
