The article examines the branching morphogenesis of epithelia in mammalian development by the used of a cell culture system. In this system, epithelial cells are suspended in collagenous matrices and treated with growth factors. It was found that these cells invaded the gel to the ends of rectangular wells. The transforming growth factor-beta is considered as a candidate for the inhibitor of invasive epithelial to mesenchymal transition.
