- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented of the Latin novel entitled "Satyricon," by Gaius Petronius, in which the author explores the roles of characters Fortunata and Scintilla in the scene known as the "Cena Trimalchionis," or "Trimalchio's dinner." The author looks at Fortunata's representation as a freedwoman and Petronius' undercutting of her role. Topics include Roman law and social codes regarding married women and freedom, and a narrative analysis of the text.
