This essay explores the relationship of eristic (i.e., illegitimate argumentation) to dialectical and rhetorical argumentation. The research into the origins of eristic in ancient Greece indicates that eristic is fallacious dialectic that corresponds to fallacious argumentation in rhetoric and is motivated by a disregard for the rules of serious argumentative pursuits.
