- Abstract
Skin is the largest and most visible organ of the human body. A healthy skin is required for a person's physical as well as mental health. Skin disorders are thus a major cause of depression amongst sufferers and that too Vitiligo which compels the person to feel embarrassed. On the basis of symptoms, the disease Shwitra described in classics of Ayurveda simulates Vitiligo. Vitiligo is an acquired idiopathic depigmentaion of the skin, probably due to autoimmune destruction of the melanocytes which is characterized by ivory or chalky white macules. Vitiligo affects about 1% of the world population with no gender and racial discrimination. In India, it is roughly estimated to be about 3-4%, although an incidence as high as 8.8% has been reported. Shwitra has been described along with Kushtha and is believed to be due to the vitiation of Rakta, Mamsa and Medo dhatus because of vitiated tridoshas.
