- Abstract
Semantic fluency performance depends on the strategic use of search and retrieval of semantically related words. These processes have been defined as: 1) switching – the strategic search of subdomains within semantic memory, which requires cognitive flexibility to shift efficiently between subdomains; and 2) clustering – production of related words within a semantic subdomain (Troyer, Moscovitch, & Winocur, 1997). The analysis of clustering and switching processes has contributed to the understanding of strategies used by normal subjects in fluency tasks and to distinguish different clinical populations. In the present study we attempted to validate the clustering and switching scoring procedure proposed by Troyer and colleagues (1997) through a time analysis of the responses made by two literacy groups in two semantic fluency tasks. The time between words generated within the same semantic subdomain (intra-cluster time) and the time spent switching between subdomains (time inter-clusters) were measured. We assume that the time between items that shared more semantic attributes will be shorter compared to the time between items belonging to different semantic subdomains of the same semantic category. The results showed that switching between subdomains (time inter-clusters) requires significantly longer times than switching between words generated within a specific subdomain (intra-cluster time). Thus, our time analysis confirmed that the classification of verbal fluency responses proposed by Troyer and colleagues reflects the clustering and switching processes underlying performance in verbal fluency tasks.
