- Abstract
The article presents a brief profile of the 19th century Jewish American family of Herman Hirshfeld of Kern County, California. Introductory details are given describing the early establishment and growth of Kern County beginning in the 1850s. Accounts are given relating Hirshfeld's emigration to California, his military career in the U.S. Army in the Civil War and in the conflicts with the Native Americans. Further details are given of other Hirshfeld brothers, including the County Supervisor Herman Hirshfeld and the Tehachapi postmaster Marcus Hirshfeld.
