- Abstract
The Jesuits came to Cádiz to establish themselves there at the request of the city. This article studies the plan drawn up by and for the Company upon arrival (ca. 1564). The drawing became an unexpected measuring instrument to weigh the growth of the maritime city at the confessional (churches, monasteries) and urban level (present and future fortifications), as well as to expand the contours of the space occupied by the neighborhood. To understand the appeal of the Ignatian map we resort to cartography and population censuses. We take advantage of Richard Kagan's analysis of Wyngaerde and his painting of Cádiz (1567) to assess the mission of the Jesuits. Confronting this perspective with the vision of the painter of Felipe II and emphasizing the Emperor's Atlantic policy allows us to achieve a renewed vision of one of the most popular cities in the early days of Modernity.
