- Abstract
Student engagement and success and increasing the retention of introductory university students have received increasing attention in recent years. Colleges of business have an ongoing need to attract capable students to the business program and to improve the engagement and success of those students. Introduction to business courses provide opportunities to engage students thinking about business careers and to attract business majors. This study describes active learning techniques implemented in an Introduction to Business course at a mid-sized public university. Using survey and student performance data, collected for a control group and in classes implementing active learning techniques, the study examines the impact of such techniques on student engagement, student success, and student intentions regarding pursuing a business major.
