- Abstract
The article focuses on Brazil in the Hispanic monarchy with specific reference to the political culture, business and missionation during the union of the Iberian Crowns and the war of restoration during 1580-1668. Topics discussed include the place of Brazil in the Hispanic monarchy, beyond economic wealth of sugar production and its strategic importance; how the Hispanic monarchy seek to solve the specificities of Brazil; and to what extent the creation by the Hispanic monarchy of administrative and fiscal structure can enhance the effectiveness of the control over Brazil and the markets between America and the Peninsula. It also discusses elements of this complex relationship remained after 1640, until the end of the sixties of the seventeenth century.
