- Abstract
The article focuses on the English poet and author John Milton and the political, poetic and religious aspects of his definition of obedience in his literary works. The author discusses the Christian aspects of the poet's definition of obedience, and refers to Milton's political pamphlet ''Apology for Smectymnuus'' and the poet's referral in the work to the obedience of the spirit of God. The author explores the prevalent theme of uncertainty and its relationship to divine will in Milton's works. The author examines the scriptural foundations relating to Miltonic obedience in both Milton's Latin manuscript ''Christian Doctrine'' and the poem ''Paradise Lost.''
