- Abstract
The disruption after the Peace of Westphalia of the alliance between the two main lines of the Habsburgs was underscored by an unprecedented escalation of disputes of precedence among members of both powers in the courtly cosmos. These quarrels for precedence undoubtedly reflected the ups and downs experienced by the bilateral relations in the midst of such an eventful century like the 17th. Both Madrid and Vienna had to reconsider their priorities regarding the succession to the Spanish Monarchy and Habsburg leadership in the Holy Roman Empire. Far from smoothing things over, the unequal regard to ceremonial issues in the two courts towards representatives of the other branch exacerbated the differences in these thoughtful considerations.
