- Abstract
The discovery of recombinant DNA and hybridoma technologies led to the ability to mass produce proteins of the immune system. Interferons and monoclonal antibodies are among the first immune proteins which have been tested as anti-tumor agents. Because the alpha and gamma interferons have different receptors, different mechanisms of action, and are additive or synergistic in vitro assays, the combination is currently in clinical trials for some malignancies. Recombinant alpha interferon is an active systemic therapy for the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. Its activity as a single agent is similar to that of combination cytotoxic chemotherapy was less serious and more reversible toxicities.
