- Abstract
The article examines how the play "Zoot Suit" by Luis Valdez reshapes the performances of terror in Mexican American communities in the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots. The author argues that the play altered the historical memory of Mexican Americans and translated the processes of racial distinctness ethnic identity from symbols of criminality into heroic images of radical resistance. Moreover, its pursuit of remolding the performance of terror made it a symbol of resilience, creativity and community pride.
