- Abstract
The article focuses on the book "Opening America's Market: U.S. Foreign Trade Policy Since 1776," by Alfred E. Eckes. The book offers an introduction to and interpretation of American trade policy since 1776, arguing that too often myths, and not facts, have shaped public discussion of commercial policy issues and considers the beliefs of America's first generation of leaders with respect to free trade and economic security, covering the period 1776 to 1860. The book also examines protectionism and reciprocity, the principal legs of American trade policy during the period from the Civil War to the Great Depression.
