- Title
Failure Analysis of Aluminum Brass Condenser Tubes due to Dezincification.

- Abstract
A condenser used in a power plant failed due to a leak of cooling water from inside the tubes. This paper details the subsequent investigation and the conclusions reached. The cause of the failure of the condenser tubes was due to plug-type dezincification and stress corrosion cracking (SCC). The root cause of the failure was found to be associated with the presence of deposits on the inner surface of the tubes. These deposits were formed by a low velocity of the cooling water and poor cleaning of the interior of the tubes. The failure process was favored by an inappropriate choice of material and poor metallurgical quality of the tubes, manifested in a non-uniform grain size structure to enhance corrosion sensitivity beneath deposits.
