- Abstract
This particular work focuses on the "foreign terminology" issues dealt in the secondary education/junior high level. Out of 10 biology textbook; designed for the secondary educational level; 627 foreign terms were extracted, meaning and composition of such terms, the level of comprehension of them by the pupils are evaluated through an achievement test (test of biology terminology). Research sampling had been conducted within the 2007-2008 fall semester, among the science major sophomore and junior students enrolled to Alparslan Anadolu High School, Atatürk Anadolu High School, Gazi Çiftliği High School and Mimar Sinan High School in Ankara (totaling 762 subjects). For statistical analysis, SPSS program had been utilized; frequency (f) and percentages (%) were measured to the responds given to the test questions by the students. Result of the statistical analysis, among the sophomore students average percent of achievement calculated was 35,8%, junior class students' average percent of achievement was 46,9%. Among the Anadolu high school students; sophomore class pupils' average percent of achievement was 58,2%, junior class students' were 70,4%. It has been analyzed that the overall percentage of achievement was considerably low. Achievement score of the Anadolu High School students were higher than the State high school students. It has been stated that students experienced problems on perceiving, comprehending and utilizing the biological terms; such condition are among the factors that has an adverse affect on the level of achievement of students.
