- Title
THE USE OF GELFOAM FOR SUPPORT AS WELL AS HEMOSTASIS IN VASCULAR SURGERY.

- Abstract
1. The use of Gelfoam for primary hemostasis and subsequent support around fabricated fresh autogenous arterial grafts is described. 2. Assimilation of the Gelfoam results in a dense fibrous tissue sheat containing nutrient blood vessels. 3. These changes are greater in degree than those previously recorded for this substance. 4. The application of Gelfoam as a backing agent in clinical cardiac surgery, thrombo-endarterectomy, secondary hemorrhage, and other vascular situations is reported. 5. This fibrosis constitutes a contraindication to the use of Gelfoam in relation to gastrointestinal suture lines. 6. If experiments currently in progress demonstrate that this fibrosis interferes with the growth of vascular anastomotic suture lines in young animals, the usefulness of Gelfoam in pediatric vascular surgery will be limited.
