- Abstract
The article discusses the author's experience as a physician at the Sage Memorial Hospital, and discusses the author's reflections on coyotes, as the deliverer of bad luck. The American Indians believe that a coyote brings bad luck if it crosses one's path. One night, a coyote ran across the highway 30 miles west of the hospital, and a couple in their vehicle fell off the shoulderless road as they swerved to avoid the animal. Both were rushed to the hospital. The wife's cervical spine films showed no fracture but a chest radiograph showed an unstable L3-L4 fracture. The author wonders whether a skeptical physician appreciate a farrago of other people's traditions.
