- Abstract
The article reports on research which was conducted on women from the Dominican Republic in an effort to discover the elements of Taino Indian spirituality that help sustain women's self perception and enhance their self-esteem. An analysis of legendary female deities called Ciguapas, who are believed in by many people from the Dominican Republic, and who are women who are alleged to eat farm crops and attempt to seduce men in the middle of the night and lead them into forests, is offered. The impact the idea of Ciguapas has on modern day women in the Dominican Republic is examined. Changes which have been seen in the gender roles of Taino women and Dominican women are examined.
