Helping or Hurting?
- Authors
Feldman, Brian N.
- Abstract
The author reflects on the use of disposable versus reusable medical supplies. He cites statistics from the British National Health Service showing that disposable medical supplies contribute 385,000 tons of waste per year. In terms of cost, the author cites medical studies which show that disposable instruments used for gall bladder surgery were 19 times more expensive than the reusable ones. He, however, concludes that there is no reliable data to determine if the use of disposables is better or worse for infection control or the environment.
