- Abstract
The article discusses the destruction of two unidentified chemical plants in Shifang by a major earthquake that caused widespread devastation in Sichuan province in China on May 12. It is suggested that the worst earthquake to hit China in 30 years reached to over 34,000 in death toll and is expected to rise dramatically as the full extent of the destruction of factories, schools and homes becomes apparent. According to the author, the region is heavily industrialized with businesses involved in chemicals, fertilizers, and other phosphorus-based chemicals.
