The author discusses and provides his own concept on the proper way of pruning. He says that pruning has to be the most confusing part of caring for fruit trees. His approach is to apply the 1/3 rule or at least 1/2 rule, not just to the scaffolds but to secondary and sometimes even tertiary branches. This formula may be applied on apples, pears, peaches, plums, apricots, cherries and even mulberries. He suggests to maintain central ladders for apple trees and pears.
