- Abstract
The incidence of melanoma is increasing worldwide. Disease progression in patients with melanoma can be in the form of local recurrence, by spread via lymphatics to regional lymph nodes, or by haematogenous metastasis to distant sites, including skin, visceral organs (eg. lung, liver, brain ) and bone, as well as to other sites. Regional or distant metastasis is present in about 10% of patients with melanoma at diagnosis. Development of clinically apparent metastasis in patients with melanoma heralds a poor diagnosis. 5-year and 10-year survival for patients with regional lymph-node metastasis are 49% and 37%, respectively and for patients with distant metastasis are 12-16 % and 8%, respectively.
