The article presents the text of a public lecture given by the author in his capacity as the 2007 Artist-in-Residence in the Drama Department of the University of Cape Town in South Africa. It explores the need for protest theatre in South Africa. It details the characteristics of protest theatre including the lack of large sets or multiple props. It cites the factors that led to the development of protest theatre.
