Charlotte Forten's Journals, especially the volumes that document the years when she worked as the first Black teacher at the Penn School in St. Helena, South Carolina (1862-1864), demonstrate the ways in which she imagines and represents nature through perspectives that bridge transcendentalism and radical abolition.
