- Abstract
The article presents information on the differences in students' cultural and educational backgrounds in multicultural second language literacy programs. According to a recent study, students' performance profiles on tests of English achievement depends on their nationalities. The major problem in intercultural testing is test bias in favor of certain groups. A recent correlational study of learners of Spanish as a second language, claim such bias to be inherent in a frequently used technique for testing general second language proficiency, the cloze test. Field dependent-independent cognitive style (FD/I), a culturally conditioned non-linguistic factor influences an individual's ability to successfully arrive at cloze solutions. The correlation between FD/I and doze test, researchers hypothesized that a cognitive style bias is operational in cloze solutions. Research findings conclude that the relationship between FD/I and quantitative skills is stronger than that between FD/I and verbal skills.
