Textual problem of "The First Part of the Contention"; Evidence that there were different treatments of Eleanor Cobham, Duchess of Gloucester, in the two versions of the play; Topical relevance of these treatments to contemporary events, including both the political prosecution of religious minorities in the early 1590s and the family history and political fortunes of Ferdinando Stanley; Implications of the textual problem for the history of acting companies in the early 1590s and for the understanding of the relationships linking plays, patrons, company style and public life in Elizabethan England.
