- Title
How a Teacher's Coming Out Changes Everything.
- Authors
Fazel, Andrea
- Abstract
The article discusses how a teacher's decision to admit that she is gay affected her career. The author reveals the pain of self-denial and guilt when she pretended to be heterosexual in order to keep her first teaching job. She cites her realization that circumstances and false perceptions of other people have made her the kind of teacher she did not want to be. The author mentions her return to teaching in a new school where being an openly gay teacher was not an issue and discusses her role as facilitator for the school's Gay-Straight Alliance.
