- Abstract
Charles Bradford Bow's book, "Dugald Stewart's Empire of the Mind: Moral Education in the Late Scottish Enlightenment," explores the life and teachings of Dugald Stewart, a prominent figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. Stewart's lectures on moral philosophy and political economy at the University of Edinburgh attracted students from across Britain and influenced future contributors to the Edinburgh Review. Bow argues that Stewart's philosophy of general education aimed to make Scottish philosophy accessible to all ranks of society. The book provides a detailed study of Stewart's thought, tracing his career and examining his impact on Scottish academia and the reception of Scottish philosophy abroad.
