- Abstract
The article discusses the history of banking in Great Britain, focusing particularly on private banking partnerships established during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Some of the banks discussed include Coutts' Bank founded by Thomas Coutts, Hoare's Bank established by Sir Richard Hoare, and the Bank of England established in 1694 to finance the Nine Years' War, also known as the War of the Grand Alliance. Other topics include the evolution of bank notes, checks and checking accounts, and the development of guilds such as goldsmiths into bankers.
